Health classes explained
Rating grades explained: from Preferred Plus down to Standard, what each means, and what factors affect placement.
Insurers assign tiers for term protection. Names differ slightly across companies, but the sequence holds: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred or Elite), Preferred, Standard Plus, Standard, then stepped ratings for elevated risk. Smokers occupy parallel brackets at elevated cost.
What underwriters look at
Stature, vital signs, lipids, family medical background before age 60, crash history, pharmacy records, work and pastimes, smoking or nicotine use. Top tier demands strong numbers across the board; Preferred is more forgiving; Standard Plus and Standard accommodate managed illnesses like controlled blood pressure.
How to use the quote tool
The health prompt asks for an honest self-assessment: Excellent aligns to Preferred Plus, Very good to Preferred, Good to Standard Plus, Average to Standard. Quotes match that bracket; carriers finalize it post-underwriting. Uncertain? Try two brackets side-by-side and let the form finalize. Overstating wellness doesn't cut price; it just skews the quote.
Susman Insurance Agency can steer you toward carriers with accommodating policies for your health profile—often more impactful than the listed price.
